Family Immigration Pattern

According to his naturalization papers, Louis Gould arrived at the port of New York on March 20, 1892, having sailed from Rotterdam. He settled in Utica, NY. Louis’s brother Max Dekelbaum (#P14) arrived at the port of New York on July 30, 1905 aboard the steamer S.S. Blucher. His passenger record states that "Mordche Dekelboun" was a 40 year-old married man, occupation glazier. His last place of residence was in Rafalovka. His destination in America was to his stepbrother Louis Gould at 14 Spring Street in Carthage, NY. I believe this is the same Louis Gould who Pesach Deckelbaum (Family #2, #P8) was destined to when he arrived in America. His stepbrother paid his passage.

Max’s wife Golde (#P48) arrived at the port of NY five years after her husband, on October 13, 1910, aboard the steamer SS Estonia. Her passenger record states that Golde was a 44 year-old married woman, traveling with her son Jossel, age 11; daughter Fradel, age 9; daughter Rasel, age 7; daughter Schewa, age 4; son Jankel, age 23; Jankel’s wife Chana, age 19; and Jankel’s daughter Gitlja, age 6 months. They were all born in Rafalovka. Their destination in America was to Golde’s husband Max Dekelbaum, at 309 S. Main Street in Herkimer, NY. Jankel had been in America before from 1907 to 1909.

Max’s son Jankel had traveled to America once before his arrival in 1910. The New York passenger record shows Jankel Dekelbaum (#P24) arriving on July 28, 1906 (one year after Max had arrived) aboard the steamer SS Pretoria. At that time he was a 19 year-old married man, occupation joiner. Jankel’s destination in America was to his cousin Louis Gould at 14 Spring Street in Carthage, NY. The record appears to say that Jankel’s last place of residence was in Rafalovka.

Genealogical Data

Max Dekelbaum (#P14)
According to the Census Records, in 1920 Max was 50 years old and made his living as a retail merchant/grocer. He resided at 2061 35th NW in Washington, DC with his wife Gertrude, age 49; and his children Joseph (age 20), Fanny (age 19), Rosie (age 18), and Sylvia (age 13). All were born in Russia, all immigrated in 1906. Max was naturalized in 1913. He was a grocer.

Max’s death certificate states that he was born in 1864, and died on March 15, 1939. His father’s name was Jacob Dekelbaum, and his mother was Sarah (maiden name unknown). His wife’s name was Dena. Max was buried at National Capitol Cemetery in DC. Max’s son David provided the information on the certificate.

Isaac Tenenbaum
Isaac Tenenbaum’s death certificate states that he died a widower on July 23, 1937, at the age of 61. The certificate also states that his father was Jacob Dekelbaum, and his mother was Sarah Susel. Isaac died in Washington DC, where he was living at that time. Isaac’s daughter Mrs. Edith Selser, who at that time was living at 1100 N. C. STREET in Washington, provided the certificate information. Isaac was buried at National Capital Hebrew Cemetery. His tombstone reads "Naphtali ben Yaacov."

Louis Gould
According to the 1900 Census, Louis Guld lived at 149 Whitesboro Street in Utica, NY. (This address is quite close to the address given by Pesach as his destination in 1903 when he was going to stay with his cousin "L. Gould" at 158 Whitesboro in Utica.) In 1900, Louis was 29 years old, and his occupation was as a peddler. He was born in July of 1870 in Russia/Poland. He was living with his wife Mary, age 23, and his daughter Ida, age 4 months (born in NY). The census also states that Louis immigrated in 1895, and Mary in 1899. Louis was naturalized in Oneida County NY on February 9, 1903.

In 1920, Louis was 49 years old, living at 1001 6th Street SW in Washington DC. He was living with his wife Nellie, age 48, and his children Ida, Dora, Anna, Ima, and Joe. All were born in NY.

Louis’s death certificate states that he died on March 5, 1925, at the age of 46. The certificate also states that his father was Jacob Dekelbaum, and his mother was Sarah (maiden name unknown). Louis died in Washington DC, where he was living at that time (his address was 4401 Wisconsin). Louis’s son Hyman Gould provided the certificate information. Louis was buried at National Capital Hebrew Cemetery. His tombstone reads "Leib ben Yacov" (Louis son of Jacob.)
